BA Programs

Students may pursue their undergraduate education at BA level, the basic form of university training in Hungary. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree after completing a 6-semester, 180-credit program.

As can be seen in the table below, our Faculty provides 58 BA majors in 13 BA programs. This is the widest selection any Faculty of Humanities offers nationwide. Above the traditional, nationally well-established BA programs (Hungarian, History, English and American Studies, Germanic Studies, Slavonic Studies etc.) we cater for special needs by providing unique study opportunities with the Liberal Arts or the Ancient and Oriental Languages and Cultures programs.

The immense variety of the BA majors enables our students to pursue their studies in almost any area of the Humanities field. Most of the 58 majors mentioned above have to be selected upon applying to university (the majors within the English Studies, Germanic Studies, Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies, Ancient Languages and Cultures, Oriental Languages and Cultures programs, and the Archaeology major within the History BA program), but there are a number of others which may only be chosen after the student has gained admission our Faculty (such as the majors of the Hungarian, Liberal Arts or the History BA programs).

Aside from the majors there are innumerable 50-credit specializations which further enrich the range of choice, and enable our students to acquire specialist knowledge within a wider field of study (Islamic Studies, Iberian Romance Philology etc.). The number of our specializations increases, and their range widens constantly, as we intend to provide our students with professional knowledge that increases their chances of employment when they enter the job market after graduation.

One of the important features of undergraduate studies is that they prepare the students for teacher training at MA level. Because of the two-subject teaching qualifications programs at MA level, our Faculty offers 50 credit BA minors in all subjects that offer teacher training programs at MA level.

For those students with specialized interests our Faculty provides 50-credit minor programs in the fields that have no teacher-training follow-up at MA level. They may thus expand and deepen their knowledge in a certain field of study in order to set their professional career on a firm basis: a student of History may for example engage in Japanese or Arabic studies to become a specialist in that area later on.

Our BA programs provide – due to the excellent academic potential at our disposal – a very high-level of education. All our BA programs are staffed with teachers whose outstanding work as scholars and teachers is well documented via various polls and statistics. But the academic expectations set by the Faculty could not be fulfilled were our applicants not among the most talented in the country, as their exceptionally high secondary school grade average indicates.
